A left-wing group’s effort to intimidate corporate advertisers on Fox News’ Glenn Beck show appears to be backfiring as it triggers a wave of support from grass-roots fans rushing to defend the popular TV personality from the attacks.

Even before the liberal boycott of Glenn Beck began this summer, the best-selling author and TV host had became a ratings superstar, with his 5 p.m. cable news program pulling mega prime-time viewership numbers. Beck also had become a lightning rod for liberal groups who didn’t like his anti-Obama message and his staggeringly large audience.

But now Beck’s fame seems to be growing even more as a spontaneous, nationwide effort has sprung up among fans to defend their hero, including Web sites, Facebook groups, homegrown e-mail blasts, and individual telephone campaigns.

The reaction in support of Beck comes in the wake of the advertiser-boycott campaign launched by Color of Change, an African-American advocacy organization with close ties to the Obama White House.

Although the group garnered some success initially, it appears that it is making claims that don’t match reality, with several major companies claiming they never joined any boycott of Beck’s show.

Major advertisers such as Wal-Mart, CVS, ConAgra, and Sargento have directed Fox News not to air their ads during the Glenn Beck Program, according to Color of Change.

The group probably would have been dismissed as a gadfly were it not for its high-level connections to the Obama White House. Color of Change co-founder Van Jones now works in the Obama administration as the president’s “green jobs czar.”

Beck has been a fearless critic of both President Obama and Jones, whose association with Color of Change was said to have ended in December 2007.

Color of Change Executive Director James Rucker tells Newsmax that his organization wants Beck silenced for his July remark on Fox & Friends that Obama -s “racist” — an opinion Beck voiced in the context of the president’s chastising of the Cambridge Police Department and Sgt. James Crowley for acting “stupidly” in arresting Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates.

“It’s preposterous and absurd,” Rucker tells Newsmax of Beck’s utterance. “It’s insulting to black Americans, and it corrupts honest debate. Anyone who uses such a platform to spew such vitriol, whether Glenn Beck or anyone else, has no place on the air, and we at Color Of Change would use every resource available to us to remove corporate sponsorship from their platform.”

Conservative Backlash

Beck’s enemies on the left, however, have awakened a sleeping giant in their campaign to destroy Beck.

Like the town hall protesters, Beck’s supporters are rising up to declare they’re fed up and not going to take it anymore. And joining in their counterattack are some of the most respected voices in conservative media.

“Glenn Beck is to be congratulated,” New York Times best-selling author Peter Schweizer tells Newsmax. “They only go after you when you are being effective — he must really be causing them problems.”

And Rich Noyes, research director for the conservative Media Research Council watchdog organization, says, “I think it tells us a lot about the style of politics coming from the organized left and this White House. They want to be so strenuous in going after their adversaries that they have a take-no-prisoners approach. I think it would be unthinkable if conservatives, particularly those affiliated with the Bush White House, had gone after a media figure associated with one of the other networks.”

Conservative icon and direct-marketing expert Richard Viguerie tells Newsmax: “That’s Chicago politics. We’re seeing the Chicago-ization of politics. We hear how dangerous it is for some of these people to come in the vicinity of the president with a weapon. Then we see the chairman of a powerful committee, Henry Waxman, issuing subpoenas to 50 insurance executives for their corporate records. That’s how they play the game. They will use any method they can to attain power and then hold onto that power. They tried to do the same with Rush Limbaugh, but Rush Limbaugh is too big for them to handle. This is how Democrats operate.”

On Thursday, DC Examiner editorial page editor Mark Tapscott wrote: “Funny, I don’t recall that the First Amendment guarantees freedom of expression to everybody except those whose opinions the four members of ColorofChange.org find ‘repulsive and divisive.’”

Tapscott called on readers to conduct a reverse boycott against the companies bowing to left-wing pressure, who are pulling their ads from Beck’s program. Those companies, Tapscott says, “are aiding and abetting a vicious, political campaign to slander him by an outfit apparently created for just such a purpose.”

A reverse boycott is precisely what’s taking place.

On Aug. 16, Beck supporter John Hill launched a Web site, DefendGlenn.com. Five days later, the site had recorded 1.9 million visits, racked up 1,033 Twitter followers, and garnered 5,800 user comments on its “Support Wall,” Hill says.

“Let your voice be heard! Fight back against the lies and the extremist boycott of Glenn Beck,” the site declares.

DefendGlenn.com provides contact information for companies that have pulled their advertising. It also lists and encourages the companies who have stuck with the Beck program.

“We launched DefendGlenn basically just to counter a lot of the distortions and lies that were put out by this group Color of Change, which we saw weren’t being countered at all,” Hill tells Newsmax.

It’s as simple as this: Just as semi-rural Georgia politics of the mid-1970s couldn’t be imposed on the Washington establishment, Chicago-style, brute-force politics doesn’t work, either. Barack Obama and the Democratic Congress started digging a hole when they decided to force-feed massive healthcare reform on the American people in the middle of an unprecedented financial crisis. And with every town hall meeting, press conference, and leak of a new strategy, they just keep digging that hole deeper. In early February, I suggested that the new president might become the Jimmy Carter of this generation. To date, I have little doubt that he’s well on his way. In fact, Obama is the “super-sized” version of Carter — the style and gimmicks that he uses to try to get his way have gone way over the top. The result is that his polling numbers are dropping like granite. Carter’s early years as president included cute moves like amnesty for Vietnam War draft dodgers, a bailout of Chrysler (sound familiar?) and the creation of an energy department that was heralded by the installation of solar panels at the White House. They never really worked. Carter’s staff felt that their man had been elected on a mandate of “change.” They got that notion from the nation’s anti-Washington, post-Watergate mood. The Carter crew viewed Congress as a necessary impediment that was expected to yield to the new ways of the White House. But the Carter team had nothing on Obama. For example, Carter began his term with no official chief of staff. But quickly enough, that role fell to a brilliant man by the name of Hamilton Jordan. While many in Washington saw Jordan as arrogant and a playboy, he was never feared like current White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is. Carter’s press secretary was the genial and soft-spoken Jody Powell. It’s hard to imagine Powell getting into the type of ruckus recently ignited by current White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. With the Obama team, everything has to be a bigger and brasher brand of Carter-style politics. Carter merely had his pearly white teeth to flash to the media. Obama has his endless wit and charm, and the ability to sink a half-court basketball shot on a moment’s notice. But just like Carter’s toothy grin grew weary on the general public, Obama’s stylish forays and endless press conferences, while perhaps still the apple of the eye of the D.C. press corps, are quickly growing old with Americans. They’re not entertained or charmed because they’re too busy being terrified over their economic future and confused by a barrage of government programs that the new administration is proposing. Like Carter, one gets the sense that the Obama administration is not as keen on the strength of our military as perhaps a president should be. Nor is he willing, at least in the early going, to stare down potentially dangerous foreign adversaries. In essence, both men came into office believing they had been given a mandate from heaven to change the lives of Americans. It’s just that Carter thought so in comparatively modest ways, while Obama came from Chicago with the idea that his big city machine should move mountains at a snap of the fingers. Like Carter, Obama is running into a buzz saw with Congress. He has quickly learned that a strong-willed liberal House speaker and a not-so-friendly Senate can mangle legislation into something unrecognizable. Now the healthcare effort has become a political football, and like Carter, Obama believes the public still loves him and his rhetoric. Here’s a message, Mr. President: They don’t. Obama is overwrought, overexposed, and under-prepared with policy details. Because of his administration’s haste to solve all of the world’s problems in six months, ideas such as the “cash for clunkers” auto program have yielded plenty of car sales, but also have proved how inept the government is at administering such initiatives. Car dealers can’t get their cash for the clunkers they accepted in exchange for new car purchases. It sure does provide encouragement about the ability of government to pay for healthcare, huh? In short, as a writer once put it, “Jimmy Carter’s biggest problem was that he believed his own ‘BS.’ ” That goes super-sized for Obama, at least for now. That’s the complaint of leading African social worker Fiona Kobusingye, coordinator of Congress of Racial Equality Uganda and the Kill Malarial Mosquitoes Now Brigade.

In a column for Townhall.com, Kobusingye writes that predictions of global warming disasters are being used “to justify telling Africans that we shouldn’t build coal or natural gas electrical power plants. It’s the almost total absence of electricity [that is] keeping us from creating jobs and becoming modern societies . . . These policies kill.

“The average African lifespan is lower than it was in the United States and Europe 100 years ago. But Africans are being told we shouldn’t develop, or have electricity or cars because, now that those countries are rich beyond anything Africans can imagine, they’re worried about global warming.

“Al Gore and [United Nations] climate boss Yvo de Boer tell us the world needs to go on an energy diet. Well, I have news for them. Africans are already on an energy diet. We’re starving!

“Al Gore uses more electricity in a week than 28 million Ugandans together use in a year. And those anti-electricity policies are keeping us impoverished.”

Not having electricity “means disease and death” in Africa, Kobusingye said. “It means millions die from lung infections, because they have to cook and heat with open fires; from intestinal diseases caused by spoiled food and unsafe drinking water; from malaria, TB, cholera, measles and other diseases that we could prevent or treat if we had proper medical facilities.

“Hypothetical global warming a hundred years from now is worse than this?

“Telling Africans they can’t have electricity and economic development ? except what can be produced with some wind turbines or little solar panels ? is immoral. It is a crime against humanity.”

Kobusingye concludes: “Uganda and Africa need to stop worrying about what the West, the U.N. and Al Gore say. We need to focus on our own needs, resources, and opportunities.”
